Council Tax Could be Frozen in Reading if Tories are Elected

Conservatives are promising to freeze council tax in Reading if they are elected, as well as cutting spending on trade unions and PR. This comes just days after the pledge from Liberal Democrats to stop households on the lowest income from paying at all, with all libraries, arts and sports venues, youth centres and more staying open under their government.

Councillor Jeanette Skeats, leader of Reading’s Tory group, said: “In the tough economic times Reading Conservatives cut out waste in order to be able to help residents by freezing the council tax. Now that the economy is improving we must ensure that we continue to get best value for money so that any savings are passed on in frozen or reduced council tax.”

Councillor Ricky Duveen, leader of Reading’s Lib Dem group, said: “We want to make Reading a better place to live, by freeing individuals, companies and communities from obstacles that stop them reaching their full potential. We recognise that times are tight. We will continue to make the council more efficient, making sure money isn’t wasted. That is why we will ensure that council tax rises are kept down and see to it that those on lowest incomes are taken out of paying council tax altogether.”

With so many people struggling to make council tax payments, falling into debt when money is tight, news of both political parties promising to make changes to the current state of things will be very welcome for many families.
